Guest Post from Fitsy at ‘Lacquer Lad’
Wow, today I have the third and final installment of ‘Guys Takeover Week’! Fitsy from Lacquer Lad has a really stunning manicure for today’s finalé! I found out about Fitsy only a few short weeks ago via twitter (@LacquerLad) I’m so jealous of his long talons and amazing application… wait ’til you see this cool mani featuring Essie and Man Glaze!
My name is Fitzy (or Lacquer Lad), and I’m here with a guest mani for “Guys Takeover Week”! Gosh, I feel so masculine already. ;P Bridget asked the hordes of male nail bloggers to submit guest posts here, and wouldn’t you know it we all responded! So let me tell you a little about myself, and then I’ll get to my nails.
I’m a 20 year-old guy from Texas, a vegetarian, a huge queer, a struggling artist and college student, and a nail polish ADDICT. I discovered blogging a little less than a year ago, and with some encouragement from my partner, I started my own blog May of this year. I have since discovered that nail polish and nail polish blogging are exactly what I want to do 24/7. 8)
Since it is Guys Takeover Week I suppose I should say a few words regarding men and nail polish. I feel pretty strongly about gender roles and expectations, but I try not to make a big deal out of what I do because, well… It’s just nail polish. It’s beautiful and exciting and it takes up most of–if not all of–my spare time, and I think anyone should wear it if they want to. But in the grand scheme of things, what someone chooses to do with their fingernails really doesn’t matter. To regurgitate some common ideas: No, it doesn’t make you gay. but who cares? I’m gay anyway! There’s nothing wrong with that. It also doesn’t make you feminine. Again, I don’t really care because I like being feminine… Do you see what I’m getting at here? It shouldn’t be a big deal for anyone. I can understand not liking nail polish on men for aesthetic reasons, but restricting something as trivial as nail polish based on gender is just ridiculous.
Oy vey, I told myself I wasn’t going to rant. That didn’t work out! I apologize.
Anyway, moving on… Nail time!
Today’s mani is what I like to call an “Asymmetrical Geometrical Tape Design.”
I started with a base of Pure Ice Jamaica Me Crazy, which is a bright magenta-based polish with a violet/blue shimmer. I only used two coats, even though there was a bit of VNL. When my base was completely dry, I used some regular old clear (Scotch) tape to divide my nail in half both horizontally and vertically, which left about 1/4 of my nail exposed.
Since it is Guys Week, I thought some ManGlaze would be appropriate. 🙂 So after taping off my nails, I painted the corner with ManGlaze Matte Is Murder, which is a RIDICULOUS shimmery matte black. I really wanted that shimmer to show, so I topped the whole thing with Essie Good To Go to make it nice and glossy.
This really started off in my head as a checkerboard mani with these two colors, but once I did the one corner on each nail, I honestly thought it looked so cool as-is that I just wanted to leave it! It’s taken me a while to get the hang of tape manis, but now I love experimenting with tape to get looks like this one!
Here’s one last picture before I sign off.
Thank you for reading! And thank you Bridget for having me as a guest poster!
OH my goodness, the macro shots of this mani are to die for! Thank you so much, Fitsy for doing a guest post for me. Make sure you guys check out his blog Lacquer Lad for more fabulous nail art and swatches. This concludes ‘Guys Takeover Week’, all will resume to the normal and NOW seemingly boring manicures by yours truly! 😮 Until next time…
